Parish Registers

*** IMPORTANT - READ THIS FIRST ****

*** This part of my website is old and out of date. I recommend that you use the main part of the site instead. However, it does contain some information not found elsewhere, so I will keep it online.

These pages contain indexes to the parish registers of Great Barford, Bedfordshire.

They are NOT exact transcriptions.

Some spellings have been modified, and obvious errors have been corrected.

Spellings of place names are in modern form, e.g. Wilstead.

In some cases, surnames have been standardised, e.g. PEDLY in preference to PEDLEY, or PETTIT in preference to any other spelling. Unfortunately, I have not been entirely consistent. The only surname change I've made to one with a different initial letter is FELPS to PHELPS.

As of June 2013, marriages for the period July 1837 to March 1901 have been rechecked, and should now more accurately reflect the spellings in the register.
As of March 2015, baptisms and burials for the period July 1837 to December 1900 have been rechecked and significantly improved.
As of August 2019, the period 1813 to 1837 has been improved.

Census Returns

*** IMPORTANT - READ THIS FIRST ****

These pages contain indexes to the census returns of Great Barford, Bedfordshire.
They are NOT exact transcriptions. Everything that I have written above about the parish
registers holds for these too.
Also, I have made many modifications for the sake of clarity. Abbreviations have been expanded.
This may include the middle names of people where that name is verifiable from another source.
Many fields that were only partly legible have been deduced from other sources - possibly wrongly.

For this reason, these should only be used as finding aids. Where necessary, you should refer
to the actual census.

The indexes:
1841 Census
1851 Census
1861 Census
1871 Census
1881 Census
1891 Census - Fields added after 1881 not included
1901 Census - Fields added after 1881 not included
